I go first: I answer my Top Ten Questions, all beginning with a “F”!
Books by Stephen Malins
A YEAR ON LAND AND SEA
Have you ever parachuted in the moonlight and juggled work with play? In 1995, Steve was trying to figure out how to take a degree in London, keep up with his military training, and learn to sail in spring Scottish waters. He couldn’t say no to an invitation to sail across the Atlantic to the Caribbean when St Lucia and the Leeward Island chain were the prize.
It’s hard enough keeping a romance alive when there were so many distractions, like landing a gig as a swordsman on a Hollywood set. There were other commitments—a jaunt to Pamplona in Spain, rowing in the Swiss lakes, and a camp in the United States, before he could join his crew.
Will he pass his exams, get to the Tropics, have time for a girlfriend, or will he end up in the doldrums? A timeless coming of age story of action, romance and grasping opportunities, as a year unfolded. A timeless coming of age and love story.
RAH RAH & ROOS
What happened when a young man ditched the office and headed to the outback of Australia for the adventure of a lifetime? In 2002, a young Englishman left London behind to try something new on a working holiday.
One year; 2,000 sheep: 4,000 km travelled. Horses and quad bikes; two light aircraft; one Ford station wagon. He uncovered real life far from the hustle and bustle of the beaches and coffee shops of the East coast. There were “Skimpies”, surly farmers, tough miners, vets and call-girls. How did he go learning to fly, and getting behind the wheel of a ten-tonne truck? Is it time you ditched the office and headed to the outback of Australia for the adventure of a lifetime?
DOWN UNDER IN MELBOURNE
After a sabbatical “Down Under” in Australia learning to fly, farm and dive the Great Southern Land, he chose to sell up in London and relocate his fiancée to Melbourne to start a family, embracing the climate, opportunities and offer of new life on an acre of land. A chance to settle as a married man.
There was lots to do—train as a firefighter, farm; fish the bay, camp and ski the Alpine, and take the kids to Surf Life Rescue. He found himself a poster boy in the newspaper, and sang live in front of 40,000 people as a reborn tenor.
This is the story of that move, yet another chapter in the life of the British expatriate full of wanderlust, looking for the greener grass on the other side of the fence.
